The Office of the State Auditor investigates allegations of improper governmental conduct by state agencies or state employees within our statutory authority granted by NC General Statutes § 147-64.6(16) and § 147-64.6B. Improper governmental conduct includes alleged fraud, misappropriation, mismanagement or waste of state resources. It also includes alleged violations of state or federal law, rule or regulation in administering state or federal programs, and substantial and specific danger to the public health and safety.

The Office of the State Auditor generally conducts its investigations confidentially and neither confirms nor denies the existence of an investigation. We do this to protect the integrity and effectiveness of our investigative process and to preserve the privacy of the individuals and entities involved. As a result, we do not provide updates on the status of any investigation.
